About Us
FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS……
In early 2009 Mountain bike enthusiasts from the city of Mackay and its surrounding districts gathered at the Mackay Surf Life Saving Club. The meeting, organized by Rob Aitken, Dave (chicken man ) Wilhelmi and Jeremy Lodge was an attempt at gauging interest and uniting the MTB’ers of Mackay in the hope of forming a dedicated off road cycling club. Along with MTBA spokesperson (Tony Scott), attendees answered the call with a resounding “YES!!” to the idea of formalizing a MTB Club…..
Within a few short months MAD MTB (Mackay and District Mountain Bike Club) was formed and ratified. During a provisional meeting Dean Waring was elected President, Lynton Stretton (Vice Pres.), Rob Aitken (Secretary), Dave Wilhelmi (Treasurer), Iain Masters & Craig Larsen (Track Committee), Nigel Copeland and Brian Lucas (committee member)
Since then word has spread and MAD MTB has over 40 Members with ages ranging from 13 to “Don’t Ask!”, such is the culture of the sport, attracting people from all walks of life, age, gender and ability. At MAD MTB people are encouraged to join, participate, have fun, learn new skills, get fit, stay fit, be healthy, meet new people, ride, race and of course, build new trails and help to maintain old ones.
Social rides have been organized including a once a month adventure to the Clarke Ranges including Mia Mia, Captains Crossing, Eungella and Cathu State Forest to name a few.
From these humble beginnings and within a few short months, our hard working committee members secured our major financial sponsors in Field Engineering and Mac’s Engineering. Other sponsors include Corry’s Cycles, RockNRoad, Mackay Toyota, OneSteel, and Hastings Deering
In a breakthrough for the club and a major milestone for the club’s future, a deal with the Mackay Scouting Organization was formalized with conditional use of the Scout’s Camping and Activities Area known as Rowallan Park, conveniently located 5 km’s north of Mackay. We hope to make this agreement mutually beneficial for both parties concerned.
There is much to do but we have come so very far in such a short time, made possible only due to the enthusiastic members and the clubs spirit. Mountain Biking is a great outdoors experience, one that promotes friendship, a healthy lifestyle, good wholesome fun and plenty of good times. We hope you come and find out what Australians largest cult action-sport is all about.
